OpenAI repackages its coding tools into “dots,” an always-on assistant
OpenAI has turned the agentic technology behind its coding tools into dots, an assistant that keeps working in the background. Once connected to email, calendar and a computer, it can flag conflicts and deadlines and run regular research to propose ways to help. An OpenAI executive said much of this was already possible with the Codex app, but needed more setup.
Dots is available in the ChatGPT desktop and mobile apps on the Pro tier or higher, starting at $100 a month. Early users complained that it asks for permission too often, and its access controls are not very granular. OpenAI says it will tune this.
The lesson for developers is that coding agents are becoming the base for general-purpose workplace agents. Indian engineers who understand agent loops, tool permissions and safe automation will be well placed as companies adopt these products. Freshers should treat agent-building as a core skill alongside classic programming.
